This is a double breasted jacket I tailored for myself to show some style options referred to as 'Italian'. And how to match patterns. Basically a Neapolitan style jacket with some personal style preferences. I like to use the classics but then add some personal spice to give my dress style a personal pinch.

A Spalla Camicia. A style option I love and hate😀 why? Regarding the creation of a clean shoulder line I prefer a more English cut. Regarding my Fuck You attitude I pose for the Spalla Camicia + shirring. SHIRRING, the small pleats, folds where the shoulder connects to the sleeve. When you have straight or athletic shoulders this style tends to raise up. All nice for a Pitti theater but you look like you have been hung on a washing line to dry before. Not very elegant. Spalla Camicia, says your sleeve has been put under-in the armhole instead of attached to it. Just like a dress shirt, it says shirt shoulder.

Patterns and designs that up the ante

Checks Squares Windowpanes. The most challenging designs you can work with as a cutter and tailor. This due to the fact patterns need to match. This only for the brave gentleman and ladies. When done correctly it is a strong but elegant display that shows you understand how to dress. Additional cloth and labor is needed that is why they often have a higher charge.

Unfortunately we must conclude that we live in a zeitgeist where it is no longer about dressing people but simply about selling textiles with a whole lot of marketing. The result: poorly made and fitting clothing at a far too high price.

The Loden Coat – A Timeless Garment of Heritage, Function and Character

What is a loden coat?

A loden coat is a long overcoat traditionally made from tightly woven and felted wool known as loden. Due to its specific finishing process, the fabric becomes naturally wind-resistant, water-repellent thanks to lanolin, and exceptionally durable. The cut is generous, allowing freedom of movement around the shoulders and back, often featuring a back pleat or cape-like shoulder construction. It is a coat born from function, not fashion, and that is precisely what gives the loden coat its understated, almost academic presence.

Origins and history of the loden coat

The loden coat originates from the Alpine regions of Austria and Southern Germany. Shepherds, hunters and landowners relied on this heavy wool coat to withstand rain, wind and cold. Later, it was adopted by the European hunting aristocracy and estate owners as part of their countryside attire during hunting weekends and outdoor gatherings.

Working with a checked fabric, such as a camel-colored worsted flannel with a check pattern, demands craftsmanship and extra attention from the tailor. Carefully aligning the checks across seams and transitions is essential for a harmonious and professional final result.

Precise Pattern Placement and Cutting

To ensure the checks align perfectly, the pattern pieces must be placed with extreme precision on the fabric. This often means laying the fabric out single-layered rather than folded, giving the tailor full control over the placement of the pattern on the cloth.
