Why the Father of the Groom Shouldn't Just Choose Any Suit

Nederlands

When choosing a wedding suit, most of the attention naturally goes to the groom. But there are other people who play an important role on the day as well. The father of the groom is a perfect example.

In practice, we often see a great deal of thought put into the groom's outfit, while the father's suit becomes an afterthought. That's a missed opportunity, because when those outfits are considered together, the overall result tends to feel far more cohesive.

Watch the video below, where we discuss this brown bespoke suit made for the father of the groom.

Coordinating Doesn't Mean Matching

When we talk about coordination, many people immediately think of identical colors, fabrics, or styling. That is not what we mean.

In fact, when everyone wears essentially the same outfit, the result can often feel flat and uninspired.

The goal is for the outfits to complement one another. The groom remains the centre of attention, while the father dresses in a way that connects naturally to the overall aesthetic of the wedding.

This brown suit is a good example. It relates to the groom's outfit without becoming a copy of it. The colours work together, yet both garments maintain their own identity.

Why This Matters More Than People Realise

A wedding day generates hundreds of photographs.

Many of those images will include not only the couple, but also parents, witnesses, and other key guests. When those outfits feel completely disconnected from one another, the overall visual impression can become less harmonious.

That does not mean everyone needs to wear brown, beige, or blue.

However, it is worth considering how the various outfits relate to one another before the wedding day arrives.

The strongest results usually come when the groom, father, and perhaps the best man agree on a general direction, after which each individual outfit is given its own personality.

A Warm Brown Suit with Character

For this project, we selected a rich brown cloth.

Brown has become increasingly popular in menswear over recent years, not simply because it offers an alternative to classic navy, but because it brings a natural warmth to an outfit.

It also combines beautifully with a range of complementary shades, including cream, ecru, beige, olive green, tobacco, and other earthy tones.

That makes it particularly suitable for someone who plays an important supporting role on the day while still looking elegant and distinctive.

The Details Make the Difference

As is often the case, the result is not defined by a single standout feature.

Instead, it is the combination of fabric, fit, proportions, and styling that creates a balanced and natural-looking garment.

Nothing feels forced. Nothing feels overly fashionable.

The suit reflects the person wearing it and the occasion for which it was made.

Ultimately, that is what bespoke tailoring is about.

Not adding as many details as possible, but making the right decisions.

The Father's Role Deserves Attention

When people think about wedding attire, the focus almost always falls on the groom. Understandably so.

Yet the father of the groom plays a visible role throughout the day and will appear in many of the wedding photographs. That alone makes it worthwhile to think carefully about colour coordination, formality, and overall harmony.

Not to dress everyone the same.

But to ensure that everything works together as part of a coherent whole.
